We are so hopeful to be able to fund some of the relief needed by little Maci and her family to overcome the devastating circumstances of a Mowat-Wilson Syndrome diagnosis. While she has been diagnosed with the syndrome, the issues that have caused that and so many others is a CHD (Congenital Heart Defect). Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a complex and rare heart defect present at birth (congenital). In hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped. Maci has already endured open heart surgery and is scheduled for more.
1 in 100 babies are born with a heart defect. About 1 in 5,000 are born with HLHS, like Maci. However, the family has yet to find a doctor or anyone who is aware of a child with the complex set of cardiac defects that Maci has, so you could say she’s 1 in a million.
Very soon, the family will hand Maci over to a team of surgeons yet again, and they will stop her heart, and work on it. These surgeries are still considered palliative (life prolonging), and not life-saving. I share our story so that people can put a face to Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs), see our reality, realize the importance of funding and research, and continue to give babies like Maci a better chance of a cure one day.
